April 17, 2009: Tea parties not about taxes...but about Big Government
In response to yesterday's nationwide "tea party" protest throughout the United States, President Obama vowed to "simplify the tax code", proving that he totally missed the point of the protest. And while simplifying the tax code would be a good thing it, like most other things in Washington, is a perennial subject about which much is said and little is done.
Americans understand the necessity of paying taxes for services and while most of us don't like doing it, we recognize that it is a necessary evil.
What the protest were all about is the sheer, utter waste which our l government -- at all levels -- operates under and it's total disregard for citizens. It was about the entrenched elitist in Washington. It was about life-timeseats and selling ones souls to get re-elected. It was about the fact that the majority of those we have elected, and stupidly reelected, care not one whit about 'public service', but only about lining their own pockets.
They were about the growth of government -- at all levels -- in our lives, from our bedroom to our boardrooms.
And, somewhere, hidden within these protest was, I hope, the recognition that the US Congress has, for far too long under too many administrations, violated the very Constitution under which they were created.
Nothing points this out so much as the 10th Amendment, which guarantees states rights. You can read it here: 10th Amendment. We are in deep trouble when even the representatives and senators from the states allow this to occur and if you don't think this is a problem, please read the April 17 column about the recent tea parties.
May I suggest another "Tea Party" except this time instead of Tea Bags, we all carry copies of the Constitution?
